South African Snake Safari Cancelled till 2003 due to international commitments

"All things considered, there are two kinds of people in the world: those who stay at home and those who do not.The second are most interesting....."

-Rudyard Kipling

UPDATE

Tickets to South Africa are only $1075.00.A group rate has been orginized if we can get 8 more people we can get return flights out of Atlanta on the 9 October and returning on 20 October. That means the whole trip will cost just over $2000 all included. We need to reserve the tickets so we must get names together and so on.We will be flying South African Airways.

Make friends with the locals

After much thought and discussion,I have come up with a plan.I am a South African in California. After hearing all the horror stories you guys have of Africa (or what you have heard),I have decided to set the record straight.I am looking at doing a herping safari at the end of the year.September,October or November.I will charge nothing and all you will have to bring is pillow cases, film, spending money and sun screen.Due to the strong Dollar against the Rand (SA currency),everything is about 10 times cheaper there.A beer will cost you about 50 cents. The danger aspect is vastly over rated, and the areas that we will go to will be far away from the cities, where most of the crime is.I am still bouncing the idea around so any feed back from you guys will be greatly appreciated. If you dream about climbing from tree to tree chasing dendroaspis,or long to chase a 9 foot naja melanoleuca into a cane field in the dark...drop me an email...
Cheers

THE PLAN SO FAR

Here is the tentative plan.
Leave for herp trip on 11 October

Be back in Johannesburg 20 October

Some people have strict time schedules that cannot let them spend too many days on leave.I will be able to leave for our trip on 11 October.Plan has changed,we will head for the Northern Transvaal immediately. Not spend any time in Johannesburg. That means the people that have to leave will be back in JHB on time and the people that can stay can go herping in the area,in what was to be the first leg of our trip. That leaves 9 days to do everything. Not alot, but it will be awesome.

As far as I have worked out, about $1000 spending money will suffice.Accommodation will be about $20 a night and depending on how many people we get,we can hire a mini van or 2 or a couple of 4x4's.Food should set you back about $10 a day.Gas will be split by who ever comes with, but should be very little.Additional things like entrance to Game parks and the like will be discussed closer to the time.

Ideally if everyone could be in Johannesburg on the 10 October,it gives you time to gather your thoughts before we set off.
Communications in South Africa are very advanced.I will have a cell phone that is reachable 90% of the time in SA.Laptop will be shared for checking and sending emails and photos.Medical insurance is a must.I will be getting a supply of polyvalent in case....but with the Cellular networks in SA,you can call from almost anywhere and they send a Medical Alert Chopper out....ONLY IF YOU HAVE MEDICAL INSURANCE....

This is all tentative, and I would like some feed back and questions.I am getting really excited about this and hope you guys are to

As you can see above we with focus on the central and eastern part of south Africa. This is where the best herps are any way.

  • A   10/10/02 Landing at Johannesburg International Airport, spend a day in Johannesburg recovering and getting ready, meeting and greeting.

  • B   10/11/02 -10/13/02 Head up to the Northern Transvaal.Depending on how many people come and how long we have, amazing places to visit and animals to photograph.Herps are the same up into that area.

  • D   10/14/02-10/16/02 Kwa Zulu Natal.Sodwana National Park. For those who dive, some of the most spectacular diving in the world. The big plus is that the dive site is in the national park that also has  Bitis gabonica,Python sebae natalensis,Dendroaspis angusticeps,Elapsoidea spp.,Thelotornis capensis,Dispholydus typus and so on.Some of the most beautiful parts of South Africa.Bound to see many beautiful animals

  • E  10/16/02-10/18/02  After the stop at Sodwana there are game parks and resorts all the way down the coast of Kwa Zulu Natal.Depends on how the schedule runs and how much time we have,we can literally stop at every prime spot.

Well,I have received a lot of mail and a lot of people are very excited, including me.There are a few things I need to clear up.The trip would cost you as much as any holiday.I will just be a tour guide.I have a good number of friends around south africa, but if 5 or more people are going,we cant exactly crash there houses. What I am doing is finding out how much accommodation will be at each stop. The more people that go the cheaper it will be.I am getting a dollar amount together, which will be how much it will cost.Bear in mind this price will be for accommodation and so on,I am charging nothing, nada, zip.I do this most years,so if you come with,it costs me nothing, there fore costing you nothing.Things are really cheap in SA,including accommodation,4x4 hire, food and recreation.I guarantee you that you will not only have on of the best herping experiences of your life, you will have on of the best holidays of you life.

I have an itinerary that is on the following site...go have a look.
